I colored my cake mix grey to make it look more like carbonite, but that did have the side effect of making the cake a rather unappealing color.Īnother issue is that it is difficult to ice a cake created in these molds as any icing will smother the details. One slight issue is that cake release lubricants pool in the mold so Han ended up without fingertips thanks to my generous useage, I suppose it’s all about finding a balance. The most important thing here was using LOTS of lubricant to make sure the cake releases easily from the mold after cooking, if it sticks in those tiny crevices Han will most certainly be losing body parts. Once R2 was out he looked fantastic but was incredibly fragile due to the thin connections to his “feet”, make sure to release him straight onto the service plate you’ll be using as you will probably not be able to move him without breakage.įinally a trip to my sister’s called for a Han Solo cake. This task did however get quite wet, quite fast so make sure you do it before changing into any party wear. Luckily the molds are rectangular, forming a reverse impression of the mold on the back which could therefore be filled with hot water to coax R2 out of his hiding place. One minor issue involved actually releasing R2 from his mold. I was curious as to how well the highly intricate detail of R2 would show up in such a gelatinous format, but it turns out that jello is excellent at holding even small details perfectly. The penultimate test was a tasty R2D2 jello. That meant scrubbing all the brownie mix out of Han’s many creases and crevices, just how I wanted to spend my afternoon. This did highlight one issue with the molds, they are not dishwasher safe. Even with my old recipe for what we remembered as a fairly solid brownie with a consistency closer to cake, the finished product just couldn’t hold any shape and had to be scraped out of the mold. Next up was an attempt at brownies as suggested on the ThinkGeek product page and the only test that went horribly wrong. He looked great after he was (very carefully) turned out and he made a fantastic alternative to a traditional Easter egg. The molds are enormous but providing you don’t fill them too deeply you can still create shaped chocolates that won’t break their recipients teeth, Han took around 200g of cooking chocolate to fill to a depth of a few millimetres. As Easter was approaching I decided to create a giant chocolate Han Solo in Carbonite for my in-laws. The second thing I tried with the molds was using them with chocolate. If you wanted to use them as ice cubes in a more traditional way, an ice Millenium Falcon would certainly look great chilling a big bowl of punch at a party. If you live in a cold climate, you could create a long-lasting Star Wars ice display in your yard, although if you live in a neighbourhood where kids are likely to hurl things at your windows, I’d advise only putting these at the back as they are heavy, solid chunks of ice that could do a lot of damage if thrown. By mixing a little milk and food dye into the water we were able to make brightly coloured figures that stayed in our garden for almost a week before melting. However, a few days after the molds arrived, the UK experienced an unseasonal snowfall, so my three year old son and I made ourselves some colored ice sculptures for the garden. Han Solo measures 10 inches tall (the mold itself is 11 inches long) and even the Millennium Falcon, the smallest of the three, is almost 8 inches long. The most obvious thing to create with an ice cube mold is naturally, an ice cube. How many things can you actually create with an enormous Han Solo in Carbonite silicone mold? I am the proud owner of a set of official Portal 2 cookie cutters and, epic as they are, how many occasions actually call for Portal cookies? I wondered the same thing about the new large size Star Wars ice molds available at Think Geek. Do you ever look at geeky themed cooking and baking supplies and think to yourself, “it’s cool, but how much would it actually get used?” I know I do. The influence of his trip to Europe likely rubbed off on the young artist, who was just 28 at the time he painted the fruit stand. With Robert Henri in 1895, Glackens “made the pilgrimage to Paris, where he soaked up the improvisational brushwork of the French Impressionists as well as the brooding palate of Old Master paintings he saw on a bike trip through the Dutch countryside,” stated a 2007 New York Newsday article on Glackens, above in a 1908 self-portrait. There’s an Old Masters feel to the painting, which may not be accidental. Coney Island would have been packed with thousands of revelers-mostly working-class day trippers who came on ferries and trains with dimes in their pockets to pursue the pleasures, and vices, of Coney’s seaside attractions. In this 1912 depiction of the riverfront-a place bustling with energy but no human faces in view-Lie “captures the new American landscape of industry and technology,” states Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester, which owns the painting. Whatever the truth of the matter, for those of us old enough to remember, Black Forest gâteaux became a much-desired dinner party dessert of 70’s and 80’s Britain. Although to be fair, this also links it directly to the German Black Forest region. It would appear however, that the origins of its name are also disputed… Some argue the name ‘Black Forest’ has nothing to do with the cherries per se and everything to do with the cake resembling the traditional ‘bollenhut’ folk dance costumes (red pom-pommed hats). And with its regional cherry links, it thus came to be known as Black Forest Cake. Or not… As is often the case with food history, some believe that actually, it was enjoyed way back in the 16 th Century, combining the local regional Black Forest Morello cherries and Kirschwasser, with the newly available import of chocolate. The Black Forest Cake is said to have been invented by a pastry chef called Josef Keller in 1915 and was originally called “Schwarzwaelder Kirsch”. Looks like I’ve made a pretty traditional Black Forest Cake then! A little history for this timeless Chocolate Cherry Cake And the sides of the cake are generally coated in cream and chocolate flakes, with the top decorated in cherries. There is always Kirsch (a cherry liqueur which is also known as ‘Kirschwasser’) involved somewhere in the recipe. One of the world’s most loved and iconic desserts, it traditionally consists of several layers of chocolate sponge, whipped cream and cherries. While the term gâteau may be French, the origins of the Black Forest Cake are, in fact, German. So, you have my permission to call it what you like… Either way, it’s absolutely delicious and (having looked at some of the other gluten free offerings on the internet), is definitely up there with the best. To be honest… Looking at my Black Forest Cake (or Gâteau), I’m still no clearer on what I have made. The sponge itself plays a mere supporting role. But typically, the fillings tend to be fresh and require refrigeration and are designed to be eaten soon after making. They might include layers of mousse or ganache… cream or fruit. It is (apparently) considered to be a little bit special… The cake that wants to ‘ make a statement’ … More elaborate, often taller and with several layers of rich, creamy lusciousness. While there seems to be no agreed statement around the differences, the gâteau it seems, comes down to that childhood perception of ‘poshness’. So gâteau = cake… Right? Well… Yes and no. I’ve also seen it described as “a rich and fancy cake”. If you check the dictionary, the most commonly found definition of gâteau is “a large, sweet cake, usually with cream or fruit in it”. But for the pedants among us (and yes, I’m one of them…), the question has to be asked… Is this a cake or a gâteau and what’s the difference anyway? As a child it always sounded posh to eat ‘gâteau’ rather than cake. What’s the difference between a cake and a gâteau? So, grab the ingredients and bowls and bake! THIS is the Gluten Free Black Forest Cake (or gâteau) of memories held. While I love the food shared here to look good, rest assured… It is NEVER style over substance. For me, it’s more than reuniting with the foods we miss… It’s about making sure they are at least as good as and preferably better than the foods we miss. I feel so sad when I see comments in Facebook groups offering support to newly diagnosed people… Telling them ‘in time you’ll get used to it’… Or ‘eat the really bad stuff first and the rest will taste better’. After all… Why should we miss out? And why should we ‘have to get used to’ food which is not as good as ‘normal’ stuff. Just like the best of the traditional Black Forest Gâteaux you remember, but gluten free! And that makes it safe for Coeliacs (and Celiacs) and anyone else who needs to eat a gluten and wheat free diet. I share with you my gluten free Black Forest Cake. Take a look at areas under evacuation orders and warnings below. Community Meeting | Fairview Fire | SeptemCAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department September 9, 2022 While it would be nice to blame technology for everything, recent studies suggest over half of all workday distractions are self-inflicted - meaning we pull ourselves out of focus. Yet, the constant stream of information pouring in via emails, team chats, and social media notifications demands more and more of our attention. If you’ve ever been interrupted when you were in a flow state, you know how difficult regaining focus can be. Don't worry about the outcome - just take it one pomodoro at a time. It keeps you hyper focused on the one next thing you need to do rather than get overwhelmed by the enormity of what you're taking on. That procrastination-busting strategy is exactly what the pomodoro technique asks you to do: break down your big tasks, projects, or goals into something you only have to do for the next 25 minutes. Doing something small for a short period of time is a whole lot easier to face than trying to take on a big project all at once. Still too hard? Try just sitting down to edit a paragraph. For example, instead of sitting down to write novel, sit down to write for 5 minutes. Luckily, studies have also shown an effective way to break out of the avoidance cycle: shrink whatever it is you're putting off down to a tiny, unintimidating first step. So we turn to Twitter or Netflix instead to boost our mood, if only temporarily. It's uncomfortable to stare down a big task or project - one you may not be sure how to even do or one involves a lot of uncertainty. Rather, we put things off avoid negative feelings. Research has shown the procrastination has little to do laziness or lack of self-control. Here's what makes the method uniquely suited to boosting productivity: Making it easy to just get started The arbitrary silliness of using a tomato as a stand-in for units of time belies the Pomodoro Technique's serious effectiveness when it comes to helping people get things done. The Pomodoro technique is all about getting your mind in the zone to finish your tasks. If the system seems simple, that’s because it is. Keep an "Overlearning" project in Todoist with a list of tasks you can quickly choose from the next time you find yourself with pomodoro time to spare. For example, you could spend the extra time reading up on professional journals or researching networking opportunities. Use the rest of your time for overlearning, or improving skills or scope of knowledge. The rule applies even if you do finish your given task before the timer goes off. Cirillo recommends that you track interruptions (internal or external) as they occur and reflect on how to avoid them in your next session. In the event of an unavoidable disruption, take your five-minute break and start again. A digital task manager like Todoist is a great place for these, but pen and paper will do too. Any ideas, tasks, or requests that come up should be taken note of to come back to later. The pomodoro is an indivisible unit of time and can not be broken, especially not to check incoming emails, team chats, or text messages. For example, "write rent check," "set vet appointment," and "read Pomodoro article" could go together in one session. Any tasks that will take less than one Pomodoro should be combined with other simple tasks. Sticking to this rule will help ensure you make clear progress on your projects. If a task requires more than four pomodoros, it needs to be divided into smaller, actionable steps. The 25-minute work sprints are the core of the method, but a Pomodoro practice also includes three rules for getting the most out of each interval:īreak down complex projects. When your session ends, mark off one pomodoro and record what you completed.Īfter four pomodoros, take a longer, more restorative 15-30 minute break. Set your timer for 25 minutes, and focus on a single task until the timer rings. Though Cirillo went on to write a 130-page book about the method, its biggest strength is its simplicity: Encouraged by the challenge, he found a tomato (pomodoro in Italian) shaped kitchen timer, and the Pomodoro technique was born. Feeling overwhelmed, he asked himself to commit to just 10 minutes of focused study time. Cirillo was struggling to focus on his studies and complete assignments. The Pomodoro Technique was developed in the late 1980s by then university student Francesco Cirillo. Take the quiz Explore on your own What is the Pomodoro Technique?
